About
The Chess Set is a natural extension of my practice and my love of the game. I approached the project much like I would one of my large-scale wood totems—beginning with hand-carved maquettes in redwood sourced from Sequoia National Park.

These wooden prototypes (pictured) served as the masters for mold-making, after which the 32 pieces were cast in solid bronze at a foundry in Los Angeles.

The bronze castings preserve every detail of the wood, from tool marks to cracks and natural grain. Each piece is finished in either a raw or dark patina.

The walnut board is designed to function both as a playing surface and as a wall-mounted display shelf, making the set just as much as a game and as a sculptural object.
